With the holiday season approaching, there’s no better time to gather loved ones around a cozy table, share a meal, and create lasting memories. Whether you’re planning a classic Thanksgiving with family or an unforgettable Friendsgiving “popup”, here’s a guide to make sure your celebration is memorable, stress-free, and beautifully unique.
1. Plan the Perfect Menu (…and don’t be shy. Ask for help!)
Food is the heart of any Thanksgiving celebration. If you’re hosting, plan a mix of classic and creative dishes that cater to everyone’s tastes. Start with traditional staples like turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing. Then, bring something new to the table—think cranberry salsa or maple-roasted carrots.
**For our Friendsgiving we opted for individual Turkey Pot Pies. They were absolutely darling and so tasty. We adapted this recipe from All Recipes. We also served a harvest inspired Kale Salad which you can find at Half Baked Harvest, prepared a Hot Caramel Apple Cider bar and topped the evening off with a family recipe for Cranberry Cake drizzled with hot caramel and whipped cream. You can find this keeper of a recipe below!
2. Create an Inviting Table Setting
A beautiful table sets the tone for a memorable gathering and is the ultimate conversation starter. Use seasonal touches—think mini pumpkins, and warm-colored linens. A favorite from our Friendsgiving celebration were our hand carved pumpkin candle centerpieces adorned by fall mums. Spectacular if we do say so ourselves! Another “go to” is paper products from My Minds Eye, because DISHES! They are lovely, festive and sturdy.
If you’re hosting in the Colorado Springs area, our team at Ivy Wild Creative can help you design a stunning tablescape that wows your guests too. We offer unique interactive rentals like display walls; perfect for showing off pies, charcuterie cones (a MAJOR hit), or seasonal flowers!
3. Set the Mood with Lighting and Music
Keep the lighting warm and cozy with candles, string lights, or dimmed lamps. Soft, ambient lighting creates an intimate, inviting space where guests feel comfortable and at home. Pair the lighting with a curated playlist—start with relaxing, instrumental music and then transition into more upbeat tunes as the night goes on.
4. Plan Fun Activities and Traditions
Give everyone a reason to linger after dinner with a few fun activities. Try a “thankful jar” where guests write what they’re grateful for and share with the group. Or bring out a deck of cards or a board game for some friendly competition. If you’re hosting a Friendsgiving, consider setting up a DIY photo booth with fall-themed props to capture the fun.
5. Toast to Gratitude
Take a moment to express gratitude before the meal. Whether you’re hosting Friendsgiving or Thanksgiving, this small gesture brings warmth to the gathering and reminds everyone why you’re there—to share food, stories, and appreciation for one another.
6. Keep It Cozy and Comfortable
The holidays can be a whirlwind, so make sure your space is comfortable for everyone. Set up cozy nooks with extra blankets or pillows, and have snacks and beverages available for guests to enjoy throughout the evening. When people feel at ease, they’re more likely to relax, chat, and truly enjoy the gathering.
Hosting during the holidays is all about creating a space for people to connect and enjoy each other’s company. With a little planning and some personal touches, your gathering will be unforgettable! 7. BONUS POINTS! Set out a “Friendsgiving Leftovers Kit”
Why it works: Leftovers are half the fun of any Thanksgiving meal, and guests will appreciate a thoughtfully packed take-home treat.
How to set it up: Buy reusable containers, and set up a leftover station at the end of the night. Encourage everyone to pack a small box with their favorite dishes. It’s a great way to avoid food waste and lets the Friendsgiving celebration continue at home.
Happy hosting! XoXo Tagan & Kelly
